In a further boost for the BMW Australian PGA Championship field, Marc Leishman and Lucas Hebert have today announced they will tee it up at Royal Queensland from November 21-24.
The pair of Victorians committed to playing multiple events on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia schedule, with Leishman and Hebert to also contest the following week at the ISPS HANDA Australian Open, while the Bendigo product will also contest the NSW Open and Webex Players Series Murray River.
Joining the likes of Jason Day, Cam Smith, Cam Davis and Min Woo Lee in the field for Brisbane, both Herbert and Leishman are chasing a first Kirkwood Cup, with the experienced Leishman from Warrnambool playing his 20th Australian PGA this year having finished third in 2023.
“I have been visiting Queensland since I was a kid, and heading there each year for the Australian PGA is always fun,” Leishman said.
“After last year it feels like I have a great chance to challenge for the trophy again at Royal Queensland.”
Having won three times on the DP World Tour and once on the PGA TOUR, Herbert is chasing his first win on home soil and will like his chances at Royal Queensland, where he shared seventh last year having previously been a resident of the Sunshine State.
“Royal Queensland is a great tournament venue where I’ve played okay without quite getting there,” Herbert said.
“The Australian PGA is one of those events every Aussie player wants to win. I certainly do and can’t wait to get back to a state I have spent a lot of time in.”
Herbert is also an ambassador for Challenge – Supporting Kids With Cancer which is the official charity of the BMW Australian PGA Championship.
Once again co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and with the party hole par-3 17th, the BMW Australian PGA Championship is one of the major events of the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia season that features 19 events, with players like Herbert and Smith expanding their presence alongside the next generation of Australian players.
“I got my start playing the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia, so playing a slightly bigger schedule this year and supporting my home Tour is something I am really looking forward to, especially playing in front of the home crowds,” Herbert said.
PGA of Australia CEO Gavin Kirkman thrilled with the presence of more of Australia’s top players at the course that will host the 2032 Olympic golf.
“This year’s BMW PGA Championship field is building into something special with more announcements still to come,” he said.
“We’re excited to welcome back Marc and Lucas to Royal Queensland next month. They’re two of our country’s best professionals who our fans love to see play each year and have won events on tours around the world.
“Even as their careers have taken them to the highest level, they’ve remained huge supporters of where it all started for them – here in Australia.
“I’m sure they will be determined to win the Joe Kirkwood Cup for the first time.”
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said Lucas Herbert and Marc Leishman were more exciting additions to the Brisbane event.
“Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital, and our warm climate, pristine fairways and vibrant precincts are clearly a drawcard for the world’s best golfers,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Major events create more to see and do in the region and are a major driver for visitation, with more than 61,000 fans attending Royal Queensland last year.
“The benefits of this world-class tournament will be felt across the region, delivering millions in economic support for local Brisbane businesses.”
