Past Champions

The Australian PGA Championship was officially established in 1929, although earlier versions of the event date back to 1905. It was originally a matchplay event before switching to strokeplay in 1964.

Behind the legacy - The Kirkwood Cup

Joe Kirkwood's name is forever part of Australian golf history with the winner of the Australian PGA Championship presented with the Joe Kirkwood Cup each year.

The Kirkwood Cup was donated by Joe Kirkwood Snr in 1928 to be presented to the winner of the professionals’ championship of Australia. The event had been held alongside the Australian Open since 1904, however the winner first received the Joe Kirkwood Cup in 1929 when the event became an official championship.

Kirkwood put Australian golf on the map. He is credited with scoring 29 holes-in-one and won numerous national and international tournaments across the United States of America and Canada, as well as the Australian and New Zealand opens.

He had nine top-10 finishes in major championships.
