Geoff Ogilvy carded a 67 on Thursday that he felt could have been even lower.
Ogilvy's playing partner John Daly found trouble early but recovered to shoot 71.
Kiwi Tim Wilkinson shot a 66 that would tie him for the first-round lead with Paul Sheehan.
Tasmanian Mathew Goggin also had to finish his round Friday morning, signing for a 67.
Victorian Robert Allenby was well placed at two under after 18 holes.
Victorian Jarrod Lyle matched the course record in round two to grab the lead.
Rod Pampling and Goggin both had good second rounds to put themselves in contention at halfway.
After negotiating his way out of the trees, Victorian Stuart Appleby got to three under after 36 holes.
Ogilvy never fully got going in round two but was only three back with 36 holes left.
Plenty of local wildlife was out on Friday, including this kangaroo.
More of the local fauna checked out the action on Saturday.
A second straight 67 for Peter O'Malley had him right in the hunt, also two back.
But Goggin was the one they all had to catch.
Goggin began well and led by three shots at one point nearing the turn.
Pampling climbed to within a stroke of the lead before fading to a 72 and equal third.
Peter Senior also finished equal third thanks to a 69.
The momentum swung later though as Goggin dropped a couple of shots.
More than 10,000 fans attended on the final day, taking the overall total to more than 51,000.
Another bogey at the last left Goggin to congratulate Ogilvy on his win.
